Herrenknecht tunnel boring machines

by Adam Kuban

The New Yorker ran a fascinating story last week about the German company Herrenknecht and its tunnel-boring machines. Here’s a link to the story, but don’t bother clicking through. It’s just an abstract; the whole thing isn’t online.

Anyway, I thought the story could have benefited from a few good photos of the machines it described, which sounded amazing. I dug around and found some.

Herrenknecht machines dug the Chunnel between England and France. (At the time it was the largest TBM. There’s one now being built that will be bigger.)
